Man, 23, arrested and charged in killing of 3 in rural Virginia

(CNN) -- A 23-year-old Virginia man was arrested Sunday, 150 miles from the rural town where police say he killed three people a day earlier, police said.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said, in a press release, that investigators first found a truck Sunday evening belonging to one of the victims in Hampton Roads on Virginia's coast. They later took the murder suspect -- identified as Rashad Matthew Riddick -- into custody "without incident" nearby at a hotel in his home city of Newport News.

The homicide probe began about 150 miles to the northwest Saturday night, when police responded to a call and found a man dead outside his central Virginia home. Sheriff's deputies then went inside and found two more victims.

They were later identified as James Clark Jackson, 55; Karen Lee Jackson, 32; and Chante Latrice Davis, 26. All three -- who were father, mother and daughter -- suffered trauma to their upper bodies, according to Madison County police.

"This is a family. Pretty much wiped the entire family out," Sheriff Erik Weaver said before Riddick was captured. "It's a sad thing to happen."

The killings occurred in the southern end of rural Madison County, which has 12,520 people living in its 327 square miles, according to the county website.

"It's a really quiet neighborhood, peaceful, so it's kind of shocking," neighbor Rashad Bolden said to CNN affiliate WCAV.

Riddick has been charged with three counts of capital murder, the sheriff's office said. Madison County and Virginia State Police investigators plan to interview him on Monday.

Besides members of those two law enforcement units, members of the Newport News Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service, Albemarle County Police Department and the Virginia Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit all played a role in the investigation and Riddick's arrest.
